The Lexington Hearing & Speech Center (LHSC) is a private, nonprofit agency with nearly 50 years of experience working with children. The Center began in 1960 as a preschool for children with hearing loss after a group of parents approached the founders, Jimmy and Edie Frankel, with a request to create an educational alternative to the state residential school for the deaf.

The Center continues to provide services to infants and children with hearing loss, including early identification of hearing loss, preschool and kindergarten educational programs and complete, on-site hearing services. The audiologists on staff are involved in all aspects of the Center’s programs and dispense hearing aids to a great many children and adults in the community. Several staff members participate in the Center’s Cochlear Implant Rehabilitation Team (CIRT) which has been in existence since 1990.

In addition to serving children with hearing loss, the Center’s preschool program provides services to hearing children with speech and language delays. The Center also has established an active outpatient clinic for speech, language, and audiology services and an on-site day care school.

If you have concerns about your child or someone you know, this checklist will help you know what to expect at each age. It is always best to have a child evaluated as soon as there is a concern to know exactly how a child is progressing. LHSC believes that all individuals must be able to receive services, regardless of their ability to pay. The Center has a sliding fee scale for many of its services.
